Getting Started: Climate and Weather
Berlin enjoys a continental climate and a special kind of air, which has often been praised.
It belongs to the moderate climate zone of Central Europe. Summers in Berlin are very nice, and you can forget about the old saying, "It would be the most beautiful city in the world if it was situated by the sea and in the Alps“. Actually, "moderate" refers to the average temperatures.
Your love for this city will be continually tested during winter – which means every winter! You can pass that test more easily with long underwear at your disposal... Fortunately, the city’s cultural life offers you a great variety of events so that you don’t have to look for a winter retreat.
Spring always arrives comparatively late, but it presents you with such a gentle contrast to the massive cityscape that its late arrival is excused by everyone. This is the time when the inhabitants realise once again how green their city is! There’s a multitude of parks and alleys with trees that do more than only provide shade. London, Paris and Barcelona are mere concrete jungles by comparison.
Finally, during the long and definitely golden autumn, the mellow light of the October sun shows you a side of Berlin that you wouldn’t even have connected with it in spring. Cosy would not normally be the first word you would associate with this city, but the autumn light, the winters which push us indoors into cosy, "gemutlich", cafés and the warm spring and summer nights render this city a most comfortable and welcoming one.
